Breathe
“Breathe.”
”You have to breathe,” she said.
I gulped, gasping for breath.
I clutched at my throat --
It felt that something,
Somebody --
Was choking me.
Struggling
Gasping
Dieing…
No!
“Breathe!”
“You gotta breathe!” She screamed frantically.
But it’s hard.
Difficult.
Struggling for air…
It came as such a shock.
I couldn’t feel my hands.
I couldn’t hear my heart beating
My chest pumping,
My legs shaking.
“Breathe!”
“You have to breath!” She shook me, desperately.
I lay there.
Alone.
Frightened.
Scared.
Not able to move.
Not able to speak.
Not about to breathe…
“You take the breath right out of me*,”
Literally.
“Girl, he wasn’t that important,” She said,
frantically shaking me.
“He was just a boy.”
Just a boy.
Just a boy??
The hell he was just a boy!
He was my boy.
My world…
I loved him…
“Breathe, girl, you gotta breathe.” She said again.
I sat up, looked into my
Best friend’s eyes.
She was such a good friend.
“I’m breathing.” I said.
Still in shock.
She hugged me,
I smiled.
At least,
No matter what boy comes and goes,
I still have her.
She’s all I need.
When the love of my life steps out,
She’ll always be there,
She’ll never leave,
My best friend --
The one who kept me breathing.
