A deluge of darkness floods from her room
As I tip-toe down the hall
My footsteps ghostlike, my shadow darkens the wall

Her eyes obdurately blocking out the day
I glance inside her door
And with warmth my heart begins to soar

At peace, her thin lips stretch to form a smile
Her tiny frame tucked under the covers so neatly
I adore her completely

An era of calm stains the air
Blankets falling and rising, her heart rhythmically thumps
Her stuffed animals under the blankets too, forming small clumps

Watching her so at ease I fill with untainted glee
With each passing moment she fades further away
In this scene, I wish I could forever stay

She doesn’t stir, her body completely still
As her nightlight hums a soft song
I long to give her a hug, but to wake her would be wrong

I hear her muffled exhales as she breathes
Sliding into her room, I touch my fingers to her cheek
Her pure jubilation makes my knees grow weak

Pulling back my hand, I drift from her room
Still unperturbed, she continues to sleep
Memories of her I will eternally keep

Her body at rest, innocence is proclaimed
All disagreements we’ve had dissolve into the air
All fights and frustration, replaced with complete and utter care
