Photographic Life
I’ve been watching through a camera
Taking snapshots of my days
I thought that if I could hold on to my past
My future might just be okay
And if I held onto every smile
And the scenes that made me cry
Well, perhaps I’d have a handhold
On the story of my life
I thought if I could take a video
Of all the good days
That I could learn how to be happy
Just from watching it replay
And if I could delete every moment
That I couldn’t take the hurt
Then my heart would have more memory
Happiness to then insert
But when I tried to light the room
The light was too bright
I smiled and posed
But the photo wasn’t right
I felt like a cover model
My face painted to be fake
My hair and clothing perfect
A glass doll begun to break
I was told to learn from my mistakes
But I’d deleted every memory
I was told that happiness is fleeting
But fleeting’s all that’s left of me
I don’t know how to live my life
Seems my instructions have been lost
Perhaps I was so busy spending
That I forgot there was a cost
My memory’s full of lies
Pretty life, but it’s nothing but pretty
Yes, my memory is full
But heart, it still feels empty
I was looking through the lens too long
Trying to find out what it took
Yes, I looked through the lens so long
That I forgot to really look.
