We go up to the 86nd floor of the Empire State Building,
Me, and my family,
Anxious to see NYC 1,050 feet in the air in the
Dead of night.
We step out of the elevator and onto the observation deck.
Into the harsh, midnight breeze and my breath is taken away.
Below us, NYC stretches as far as the eye can see.
We see the Hudson River dividing New York
From New Jersey.
I see taxis and cars in the streets
that look like small pebbles and twigs,
slowly floating down a large stream
Above us, a plane flies not too far overhead
So close I felt as if I could see the people on it
gazing out of the plane's’ windows into the vast starry horizon
The lights in the city below light up the whole world,
Like Earth’s very own flashlight
I feel the late night breeze in my face,
Filled with the smells of all of New York
As we start to head back to the exit
I take one last look at the NYC skyline
And soak it all in,
Taking one last sweep of the horizon
I step back inside, already missing NYC from above

I was inspired to do this piece because this moment in my life was one of my favorites, and I've never wrote about it before, so I decided to write a poem, consisting of the moment I arrived to the moment I left.
