Not Yet
Not yet is what my Daddy said
  Those years long ago,
When I asked him about college
And the places I would go.
Not yet is what my momma said
  In times of recent past,
When my body like a twig
  Was growing very fast.
Not yet is what my friend said
When I said I’d run away.
Stay here and live among us
  For just another day.
Not yet is what my teacher said
When I said I’d be like him.
Take it easy, take it slow
  Examine every passing whim.
Not yet is what my brother said
The day he left my side.
  Where I was left alone
  And bitterly I cried.
Not yet is what my heart says
As I stand here all alone.
  The fear of growing up
will haunt me till I’m grown.
