There was a buzz in Harlem.
The roaring 20’s were in full swing
African American creative-types were thriving
Because of what their writing, singing, and painting would soon bring


A group of writers and influentials within Harlem
Began a cultural movement that drew attention
The movement was called the Harlem Renaissance
It expressed pride in blacks and motivated far too many to mention


This movement influenced
African American culture through literature and art
Unfortunately, the movement didn’t last long.
The stock market crashed, the KKK became big
And black writers left Harlem to spread their work in Europe, so their culture would become strong


On February 9th, 1944, Alice Malsenior Walker was born in Georgia
She was born to sharecroppers who worked the land
She grew up poor, but got through school.
And became a novelist, poet, and activist at hand.


Because of Alice’s most famous novel, The Color Purple,
She became active in the civil rights movement, too.
She won the Pulitzer prize for her novel in !983
Her famous book became a movie that drew new audiences that grew


A novel called Cane by Jean Toomer, written in !923
Was a literary foundation in The New Negro Movement
This novel was a model and driving force in Alice’s writing works
It helped her draw attention to civil rights and make a statement

Alice Walker’s writing bring awareness to civil rights,
Which is a continuing issue in the world
With people around the globe reading her stories
The Harlem Renaissance knowledge remains unfurled.
