A miracle is just another name for hard work
-Minho in "To The Beautiful You"

He hands a letter
I tear it open
How quick life changes
In a moment

My breathe escapes
My heart stops beating
All thoughts have fled
I am not seeing
The steps made
The feet, leading
Mama coming
To the door

“A bag” I say
“We won’t be needing”
All the sounds are retreating
Til nothing’s left
Save the keening
Of the wind
As we’re leaving
Trekking to the morgue

Guards posted at the door
I say words they can’t ignore
The guards step back
Then I step through
So unprepared for the view
Before this time
I never knew
Life could be so cruel

The tears are streaming
My soul is screaming
A heart lays shattered
On the floor
I am yelling
Fill the silence
I can’t bear it
Anymore

Little Maté
How still she lay
On the mat and icy floor
No more writing
No more braiding
No more crying
Anymore

Strong Minerva
Wake and chide me
Like you always would before
Squeeze my hand
Please I beg you
Can’t you hear me
Anymore?

My Patria
Are you in heaven
With your dear beloved Lord?
Why’d He take you?
Were you not needed
Here on earth
Anymore?

Oh Rufino
With my sisters
Sleeping in the morgue
Why’d this happen?
Why’d you leave me?
Here alone
Forevermore

I want to die
To be with you
But living is
My martyrdom
So here I stay
I’m staying here
Until the day
When death shall come

The author's comments:
This is based off the spanish novel "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez. Four sisters take part in a Dominican revolution to overthrow the dictator Trujillo. Three of the sisters are murdered while one is left to survive.

This deserves to be published. So heartbreaking...now I really want to read In the Time of the Butterflies and learn more about the story of these four sisters.

I've never had a poem make me cry so much! Wow, for some reason this really spoke to me even though I haven't read the book you spoke of. This is just....golden medal worthy. I can't explain the beauty and yet tragical air you profess with the last line about the sisters' martyrdom being on Earth instead of in death. I just LOVE this, I will have to put it into my faveorites by the way. Excellent job! :,)

So beautiful! I just had to read this twice. Every word is delicate and important, leaving echoes the reader will always remember.

“Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there's a tomorrow. Maybe for you there's one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it.
But for some of us there's only today. And the truth is, you never really know.”
― Lauren Oliver, Before I Fall

I officially love you!! In the Time of the Butterflies is one of my favorite books. I automatically love this 10x more. Minerva is my inspiration :) Ok ok, the poem in general is fantastically written and has great rhythm. This should be published.

The ryhming and rhythm of your poem is fantastic! There are a few lines that seem alittle forced, but for the most part everything flows quite smoothly. Nicely done! Five stars

I really, really like this. The narrative tone of it kept me interested, and the rhyme scheme throughout gave it a good rhythm and was easy to read. I love the line "But living is/My martyrdom". Brilliant XD Good work, 5/5 :)
