Her Children

She likes to play with children,

    As her childhood was stolen,

She finds comfort in their innocence,

    Oh, it is no coincidence

    That her innocence was stolen.

    So she protects theirs,

Her hair flows as she runs with them,

    Her children.

    And everyone knows,

    Wherever they stay,

    She goes.

    The other ones,

    They ruin her-

    But the children,

They put a spark in her.

I watch her as she skips and laughs,

But I know what she hides

    Deep under that joyous mask.

I wish I could do something

    For her,

But I don’t want to bother her,

So I watch her with the children

    And smile as she gives

After everyone has only took from her,

    Mistake after mistake,

All they seem to do is take.

    But she-

    with her strong soul,

She is better than most people I seem to know.

    Everyone calls her names,

And I know it causes her great pain,

As she always plays these childish games,

But she comes out for them always-

Nothing can bring her down for long-

Back and forth, like a restless, endless game

    Of ping pong.

    I’m standing in the shadows,

Watching her try and stay strong-

And she always, always hangs on.
