Where I Am From
I am from towering grass brushing against legs,
a home of adventuring on the hill, and running from
house to house playing with neighbors.
From living in what once was rural now is suburbs,
what once was tight now is spacious, and
what once was wood now is brick.
I am from a home of a welcoming 400 foot driveway,
a worn playset with swings that creeeacked when swung,
and a trampoline that bounced me to the clouds.
From a body of mosquito bites head to toe, listening to the
crackling of a fire, and sticky fingers from s'mores.
I am from a home of mom saying, “Always do your best”
and “Pick up your room” and “Come on kids, dinner is ready!”
From a super-family of four, and a brother that is
my height yet half my age, and a dog that barks at the wind.
I am from Hikes at Lapham Peak with friends,
taking a drive with the windows down watching my
hair go from side to side, and going to Starbucks for the newest drink.
From playing tennis on a sweaty day,
getting burned in the scorching sun, and
going through three water bottles in one hour.
I am from a time of sports and not knowing if I should choose
the top spin of tennis, the flips of gymnastics, or the red
hands of volleyball.
From stressful tryouts, to being accepted, and then proving myself.
I am from church retreats, praying during the hard times, and thanking
for the positive ones.
From a book of quotes of “Never give up, always give 110%” and
“Family time is the most important” and “Reach for the stars.”
I am from towering grass brushing against legs.
