Emerald Eyes
The sunlight surged through the windows,
Warming the entryway steps.
Beyond the glass the snow was sparkling like a diamond,
Sending fractals spinning through the air.
The chatter of church members wafted around us as we watched the light dance.
At my sarcastic remark you tilted your head back and laughed, turning towards me
And the world froze.
The light
Halted mid-dance,
The voices
Dwindled away,
And the world
Faded.
It was just you
And me.
Your lips were tilted into a playful smirk,
Cheeks highlighted by the sun.
Your neck was cast in shadows,
Blonde hair glinting in the sunlight.
The light pouring through the windows struck your eyes just right.
They gleamed a deep green,
Like twin emeralds twinkling at the bottom of the ocean.
Losing myself in the green depths I forgot how to breathe.
Without warning your mother beckoned, and the world rushed back.
The day continued on but I stayed in the memory.
Your eyes were seared into my mind like a lighting storm
And I feared from that moment you’d become much more.
