Sweet Summer Dreams
Summer nights mean sunsets and box fans and thin blue sheets.
We fell in love in the summer.
As pretty pigments bloom, my dreams do too.
I hear you calling my name in the abyss.
When I’m awake I can’t remember your face.
I know the color of your eyes,
I can picture your slicked back hair,
But how far down does your nose arch?
In unconsciousness I see it clear as day.
It sits there waiting, like a bookmark to the greatest love story ever told.
I wonder if you dream of me.
As I toss and turn and yearn for a cool spot on my pillow,
I wonder if I’m awake in your dreams.
Alive, the way you always made me feel.
Will you ever come back to me?
Were we nothing more than a chapter to you,
A footnote?
Am I just a supporting role in your thoughts?
If that is true,
Then I will sleep until I slip away into nothing,
For it is my only way to stay with you.
