Childhood Ignorance
There it was, an oasis
After two long hours in the sun
In an RV without AC
From one state to another;
A beach. Perfectly lit by sun
And a perfect playhouse for six year olds.
Every place has its secrets
But this one was large
A swarming mass
A clawing colony
Of small sea creatures,
Waiting to attack.
I dove underwater unaware of the danger
And got bitten. How dare they!
Those miniature monsters! How evil they are!
But wait, that's interesting. They have a shell?
I'll pick it up, and put it in a pail!
Then I’ll show my mother!
And my sister!
And everyone at the beach!
So I ran to my parents
But the only buckets were large!
Oh well, only more space for more miniature monsters!
I splashed into the water and went underneath
Grabbed as many as possible
Oh, how heavy the bucket was!
The crabs were clawing and
What?
They were losing their shells!
What should I do?
I’ll bring them back with me.
A veterinarian had visited my classroom a couple months ago,
So i’m practically a professional vet now.
I’ll give them new shells, and put them in a bowl with my fish!
They’ll be living well, no fear of the tiny grubby hands of children
They’ll never have to taste the disgusting ocean water.
The new water will be fresh for them!
So I tossed them in the trunk of the RV,
Those tremendously troublesome creatures were sure to be fine there.
It’s only a forty five minute ride to the trailer park.
It’s also only ninety degrees outside.
The heat’s probably good for them!
And so we rumbled on to the park.
We arrive at the RV park
And i explode out the doors.
I open the trunk,
Peer in the bucket,
And see some of the creatures…
Floating!
Silly little things. I wonder why they do that.
I snatch one up, noticing the warm touch of the water on my hand.
Why doesn’t it move?
Oh well, it’s probably sleeping.
I grab the bucked, splashing the water on my swim trunks
And then- Oops!
The silly little creatures are everywhere!
I spilt them!
That must've hurt. But it’s okay, they were asleep anyways.
“Help me bring this bag in!” yells my mom from the trailer.
I run inside, leaving the creatures on the green turf,
An unfamiliar home,
But it’s ok. They’ll survive. No matter what. I trust them.
