Forever is an empty promise
A man once made to a woman
Long ago under the sun's setting rays
And since then it has remained

A fancy hope that an earthly paradise
Will survive the earthquakes
The thunderstorms
The twisters
The destruction of time

Forever is just a word made up
And tied to a string around your heart
Pulling it along
And then one day the string frays
And snaps
Leaving you completely unattached

Forever was just a warm dream
And a cold nightmare
Then I glanced up into your eyes
So, how do I handle
The timeless lie?

"You never know what it enough until you know what is more than enough."

I, too, have been wrestling with this concept of "forever." the meaning of words that hold such supposed weight...the 'i love you forevers,' and you bring me so much comfort with this poem. you make bold claims, that it is an empty promise, a word made up, an empty expectation, a lie, giving such life to a word as if it is living, a creature, something real, as people make it out to be. your thought process is slightly pessimistic here, something I can relate to, and I appreciate your diction very much. thank you
