Supporting Role

I don’t like to be the center of attention

A confession I don’t normally talk about.

But if I’m being honest,

I’d rather be out of the spotlight,

Sitting in the background,

Than bound to the front of the crowded classroom.

Maybe because I play the supporting role

Better than the main character.

I like to remain quiet,

But not because I have nothing to say.

Maybe quiet people just notice more.

Like the authenticity missing from the words,

Of those around me.

Maybe that’s why

I like to keep my thoughts a mystery,

Giving you the liberty

To figure me out yourself.

I’m the stereotypical reserved smart kid,

The overcritical, predictable one.

I can’t afford to lose focus,

When my grades are so important.

I’m an anxiety-ridden, anti-social, soft-spoken student,

I don’t have many options exactly,

So I keep my intelligence no less than satisfactory.

I mean,

Who actually appreciates the inherent introvert

When their benefits aren’t so obvious?

I’m the supportive, behind the scenes, observant friend

The one you come to

To study for the math test.

I'm good enough for answers

Just not much beyond that.

Because when it comes to your standards

I can’t seem to reach them.

So I’ll be in the back,

Behind all the action

For the next time you need me.

I guess I just wasn’t made

For the role of the star.

So I’ll stick to what I’m best at

My strongest suit.

The supporting role.
