Box of Chocolates

I have never gotten a heart-shaped box of chocolates

But if I did

I would love it

I would display it in my room

Love in a red ribbon and praline cream

Leave it on a shelf

Let it grow

To green speckled

Mold if

I got a box of chocolates

I would love them

Even though I couldn’t eat them

I can’t, I'm

Allergic to happiness

And healthiness

And true

Love

Nah, those are appearances

I’m just allergic to chocolates

But if I got a box of chocolates

I pick out the raspberry one

Seedy red slime covered in dark

The last in the box

When I played roulette

With candies

Hoping for Carmel and nuts

To serenade me

Bittersweet hitting

My tongue

So I’d spit out red seeds

See I watched Forest Gump

And maybe life is a box of chocolates

Maybe it’s just my luck

Maybe I got

The raspberry one

Maybe its just fruit filling

Dripping down my wrists

If I got a box of chocolates

It would bleed

Like the only hearts love’s

Ever given me have

Pulling pulsing muscles from my chest

Roughly the size of my fist

Right?

Like loves fist

In my cheek

No, my arms

No, my ribs

So no one

Can see

If I got a box of chocolates

I'd cry

Cry all tears other gifts have tried

To dry

Cause roses are thorny

And loves thorns are rosey

Cinnamon rolls, my favorite food

Love knows and pours icing

To cover up the iron

But if love gave me a heart-shaped box of chocolates

I would cry

Because love has never given me anything

Unless you count the flashbacks and the tremors

And the nightmares and the panic attacks

And the bruises and the scars

I guess I cried then too

Love gives me lots of tears

Saltwater drips

At least

If I got a box of chocolates

The tears would be sweet

The author's comments:

This piece is inspired by a joke my friends and I used to say all the time about how we got the raspberry chocolate in life. Running with that, I wrote a poem about my past abusive relationships and intertwined it with a box of chocolates.
