we fell to the floor laughing uncontrollably,

until we couldn’t laugh anymore.

you looked at me with your deep blue eyes,

and said,

“i love you,”

my heart glowing as the words were said,

i replied,

“i love you more,”

you laughed and said,

“impossible.”

we went back and forth,

to see who would win the playful and innocent game.

but as we stand here months later,

i look into your deep blue eyes once again,

and my stomach dropped.

i looked at the floor,

as my heart crushed inside of my chest.

you picked up my chin to look at you,

and when i looked back into your deep blue eyes this time,

they didn’t look back into mine as they once did,

with love.

they looked into mine with sympathy,

and i realized i had won.

not you,

not your love,

and not your heart,

but i won something else.

you apologized to me,

and said goodbye.

my body went numb as you turned around to walk away.

you kept walking and didn’t stop.

when you were too far away to hear my voice,

i whispered,

“i knew i loved you more.”
