The Modern Politician
I see the way your eyes glint on morning saunters,
Sworn by your goal to Be with the People.
That’s where your mouth is sworn
But your heart and mind are sworn to you.
Sworn to your reputation.
Your money. Your laws.
Not the laws but your laws.
I want no part in your delusional reality,
I want no part in where I am excluded,
I want no part in where
your policies do not welcome me.
Swear at the podium it’s me whose voice you seek,
But swear behind closed doors you will do
what brings you to the peak
of the Money Mountain.
Your guilty fantasies are privately sealed
You portray angel after angle,
But you have no resemblance to your reflection.
I understand that no politician is perfect, just as no individual ever really is. However, I find that there is so much corruption in what politicians truly value. There are many politicians who will swear to value people of all identities and voices, and then proceed to implement policies or legislation that do nothing but hurt such people. This is a problem within all political parties, and I was inspired to write this poem as I pondered the possible differences between what politicians say to the people, and what they engage in behind closed doors.
