“Sometimes I can hear my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I'm not living.” - Jonathan Safran Foer

What a world this is

Where everyone acts childish

Except for the children

Who are forced to grow up so young

To fill the roles abandoned by our leaders

You criticize them

As if they are not doing the work

You are supposed to do

You harass them

As if they are not stronger than you will ever be

Do you not feel ashamed

To require the kids we call our future

Carry the weight of the present

on their fragile backs

When they were born

You promised to protect them

And let them run in blissful ignorance

For as long as possible

Before the cruel truths of the world caught up

You failed

The author's comments:

I wrote this about how so many young people have risen up to speak about current events and the future of the world because current leaders refuse to.
