Shattered Memories
Dear friend,
Do you still remember?
Do you remember the midnight walks
when the moonlight shone through the willow leaves
and only the pattering of our light footsteps could be heard?
Do you remember the way we laid in our wooden bunk beds
and softly gossiped until
dawn broke through the sky once more?
Do you remember the time we climbed on top of the
shaky fence and balanced on our delicate toes
with the sun beating upon our backs?
Do you remember the long alleyways decorated
with colourful paints that would echo for miles
with the sound of our joyous laughter?
Do you remember the summer afternoons
when we ran silently along the sandy beaches
and scattered our pennies upon the sidewalk?
Do you remember the day we said goodbye
and rode into the rain,
with tears still twinkling in our eyes?
That day you turned around,
and at the last moment,
came running back to me.
Now, we have been separated for so many
years that I can’t even count them.
Believe me, I have tried.
Gradually, we forgot what each other looked like.
Gradually, we let each other go.
Gradually, we realized that this time, no one would come running back.
You were busy with your life,
and I was busy with mine.
Perhaps we would meet again someday,
but by then we would be nothing more than strangers.
We would simply brush past each other,
not knowing that the person who just
passed us by had once shared the
best moments of our lives.
Dear, friend
Do you still remember?
Yes,
I have forgotten too.

Separation and goodbyes are an unavoidable part of our lives, but true friendships, if lucky, transcend time. I hope that when people read this piece, they can be reminded of that special person in their lives who once was always by their side and who helped create some of their favourite memories.
