Where I Belong

I belong with my restless sisters and my jumpy dog

I belong with the tech girls

I belong with my soccer buddies

And with my loving parents

I belong where the trees meet the sun

Where the bees are always buzzing

I belong in the country of silks and spices

Where I can always make sand

Into the beautiful flower it’s meant to be

I am intelligent

Courageous

Compassionate

Like my home of India

I belong with my adventurous grandparents

Who traveled the seas way before me

Coming to a new land

And first walking on the sand

I belong with the light

That shines from the sun

I belong with the good that vanquishes evil

Light against dark

Since I was young

My color has shown

So bright, such beauty

I belong with the beautiful

I belong with the bright

My color brown

On the outside

And forever on the inside

I belong with those who love ME

The me that is on the inside

Who I really am

Kind, Compassionate, Courageous

I don’t belong with those who see my color

And my color only

Who don’t know me

I belong in many places

And many places belong with me

You cannot change the me that I am

Because I will blossom here forever and ever

This piece is for all those who are discriminated against as brown-skinned or from India. This is where we really belong and who we really are.
