I sit on my driveway

The once burning pavement cools against my legs

Warm wind blows near the ground

Bringing the smell of damp grass

The sun is nestled between two mountains

As it hovers just above the horizon

The clouds are tongues of flame

As they hang frozen in time

The air is heavy from the weight

Of a day almost over

But the stars grow eager for their turn

So the sun dips below the earth, heaving its last breath

The clouds pale against a darkening sky

The air grows cooler as night settles in

All is quiet

The first crickets

Begin their chirping

Rising, I turn and head

Back to the brightness of my home.
