Fathers Song

My father knows what song he wants to play at my wedding.

I say “I’m still only 16”

I have a ways to go before marriage.

He smiles, he laughs,

He shakes his head with no worldly response.

My father knows what song he wants to play at my wedding.

He sings at the top of his lungs,

The words, the melody,

As if I’m getting married tomorrow.

Or like the world will come to end along with the instruments.

My father,

The emotionally distant,

Knows everyone but hates social settings,

Amazing home cook,

Knows what song he wants to play at my wedding.

As the lyrics say,

“Fathers be good to your daughters,

And daughters will love like you do.”

I couldn’t be any better of a daughter,

Or any better of a lover.

Without him,

Being my father.
