The inspiration for this poem was one of my favourite euphonium pieces, Midnight Euphonium. To me, the piece conjures an imagery of someone standing under the moonlight, alone and hesitating, confused about what to do next. The melody is very lyrical, as if the protagonist is unfolding a story gently - sometimes soothing, sometimes dejected, sometimes angry. So I started thinking about the story they might be telling: could they be an unrequited lover who was unwilling to accept a rejection? Could they have sacrificed their own happiness for someone they loved? Could they have made compromises that left them traumatised? Whatever the scenario, it's about someone uncertain of what they did in the past and what impact it has on their future.
