“You fail only if you stop writing.” ~ Ray Bradbury

The pine trees stand their ground

The soldiers of the forest guarding the village

Who’s citizens make up a kingdom

They watch

They watch the snow fall to the ground like feathers

They watch the snow gently kiss the tips of their branches

A smooth, gentle kiss

One a mother gives to her sleeping baby

The pine trees listen to the soft and distant howl of wolves

They listen to the small, steady waves as they flip

And tumble

And toss and turn

From the lake

The lake wearing a thin jacket of ice

The lake with a soulless heart

And a heartless soul

The stars perform a dance

More elegant than any ballet

The moon beams with pride

Pride so bright it

illuminates the earth that has been swallowed by a shadow

The pine trees glisten in the light

Footsteps

The quiet pitter-patter of feet

The crunch of boots in snow

The hushed voices of humans

That want to be hidden

But the voices escalate

From wind-like whispers

To shouts of thunder

CRACK

A sound so powerful

That just listening to it

Could split the bark of a tree

A sound so powerful

It can poison you with fear

Just by the sound of it

Screams

Screams flood the pine trees

But all they do is stand

And watch

And listen

Running

No, sprinting

Humans sprinting through the snowy forest

But only one makes it

The pine trees only see one

Bolt to the once brown dock

That is now white

Such a tiny human

Its breath shimmering in the moonlight

Slowly backing away

Ever so slowly

Like a snail

Liquid crystals pour

From two hickory brown faucets

The tiny human quakes

Like a tree when the wind is full of rage

As it continues to back away

Ever so slowly

Like a snail

Until its feet find the edge

Of the once brown dock

Gravity is not happy tonight

It's consumed by its cruel and evil side

The invisible force yanks the tiny human

From the sturdiness of the once brown dock

Breaking the enormous window

And plunging into the lake

The lake with a soulless heart

And a heartless soul

Splashing

So much splashing

Yet no one around

Except the forest guardians

But they only stand

And watch

And listen

Limbs freezing

Lungs exploding

Blood clotting

Heart failing

Brain…

B…

The tiny human sinks

Sinks

And sinks

Into the lake

As the pine trees stand

And watch

And listen

As the tiny human sinks

Into the lake

The lake with a soulless heart

And a heartless soul
