Extinguish
Extinguish
Sacrificed everything,
just to be given nothing.
Brave enough to remain strong,
yet break down when the room empties.
But this isn’t the way it should be.
Dreams broken from an alternate reality.
One only brought about during bad times.
But unlike a nightmare,
once awoke, nothing has changed.
And the cycle will continue,
like an endless carousel.
Childhood passions
and adult reality,
fighting like opposite poles of attraction.
Ones scared to take charge.
Others fight for a voice.
But it’s hard,
because it shouldn't be like this in the first place.
It's not easy to fight for something that should already be given.
And maybe someday it’ll all be okay.
The spark of passion will reignite.
But for now, we must stop at nothing,
to grow into who we were destined to become,
and seek the needs of change.

I wrote this piece for my creative writing II class for a Raise Your Voice assignment. I was raising my voice for unfair pay/treatment for teachers. This is an issue that concerns me because I am going to college to become a teacher in the future. I think poems are a great way to voice an opinion; especially on important issues and i find my best work is done through poetry.
