Rubber boots sloshing in the sticky and oozy mud

Salutations he says behind the rickety kitchen screen

Almost done with my breakfast I mumble

Mouth full of leftover custard pudding and baked beans

Earlobes droopy

Eyebrows as long as whiskers

Vibrant skin

Cheeks stretched

His smile a second sunrise

Beauty at war

One eye blue, the other green

Call the immortals!

It’s a close race

His hands win first prize!

Lead me down to the brook where the trout swim

The boisterous blue jay and weathervane show us the way

Be sure to hold my hands within yours

Right, then left, together we play

Sun-spotted hands

Tracing the moles with my eyes

Is that you Perseus?

The author's comments:

Hi, I'm Avery Azad, currently a junior at Harvard Westlake who enjoys spending time in nature, writing poetry, running, and culinary adventures. Nature is my sanctuary to feel connected with Earth whether hiking through forests, wandering on sandy beaches, gazing at the sunset which is why most of my poetry centers around its beauty. I also am on the Varsity Cross Country and Track & Field teams and love trying new cuisines to experience diverse flavors.
