Melanin Therapy
Sometimes
I scrub and scrub,
wishing I could see the pigment go down the drain.
Sometimes
I brush and brush,
Beating my hair straight and tame.
I don’t have blonde hair or blue eyes.
I have the brown skin,
wild hair, and big lips.
And sometimes I wished I really loved it.

Over time, I see more diversity in media, but I know that sometimes it’s just that. For diversity. Deep down I know that they will always pick the blue eyes and blonde hair girl, but I’ve come to terms with that, because I’ll always be the ‘black girl’ in class, movies, or pictures. I’m not a human , but a diversity point for companies to score.
