water lilies—

a serene scene of textures

and colors pleasing

to the eye, the bridge a

staple in every heartwarming

romance, and the warm glowing

light, the perfectly parallel pond

creates a reflection as even

as the tall trees it mirrors

i can put myself in

the landscape, imagining a

dented rented canoe sliding,

slithering roughly along

the carpet of lilies,

i see one fall, it’s delicate

bright petals broken

under my weight, i watch it sink

to the deep dark hidden depths

i sympathize with monet’s

vision, the panorama

of perfection displayed so

finely, but then i can’t

help but wonder,

what is poised in the

pond, lurking in the trees,

because nothing is truly ever

as serene as it seems
