Abandoning the past
The bright yellow sun shimmered down,
like an angel descending from the skies,
as I laid on the luscious grass,
began to think about all of my sufferings and how I got here,
Born into a poor family in China,
raised traditionally like all the others of the time.
Life was simple yet tough,
no opportunity nor escape from this endless cycle of suffering,
Given the opportunity to run away and start over on a clean slate,
Intriguing, but the traditional side was afraid of change,
perhaps too scared of the risk it posed,
Like a deer in the headlights,
Frozen.
Life is about change,
At the end of the day,
everything must adapt to their surroundings,
And their surroundings adapt with them.
Harsh environments provide opportunities for the strong,
I took the risk, a path of no return.
At least my family was there with me from the start.
Arriving at the land of opportunity,
the airplane door flung open,
a confusing breeze of gasoline and pollution,
invading our lungs almost like a warning.
This new feeling perplexed me, I was in a trance,
rethinking my decision to move here.
Life was moving pretty well,
The job was jobbing and the house was housing.
Surely this was the American dream I had dreamed of?
A humble and stable life and a happy family.
All a man could ask for.
Obstacles had to come running my way.
What a demeaning feeling, being kicked out of my job,
forced back into the job hunting race,
Reality hits, and it hurts real bad
Lost in the masses,
sacrifices were made to get by.
I fought through the struggle,
Putting my all knowing the risks,
Finding a form of peace,
Aware of the life I want back,
Motivating me to keep moving and working.
Finally reaching the American dream,
Stable and harm free,
Experiencing the fun of American life,
Exactly as the book had described.
