The night sky dances above the town,

Casting shadows as it wraps it up in an evening gown.

Stars twinkled big and bright,

Illuminating houses in gentle light.

The tall black shape sulks in the sky,

As it kissed the moon good-bye.

The moon, beaming proudly,

Rumbled loudly,

“There is nothing more beautiful than me!”

The dark shape felt a tug of absentee,

For he could not be as pretty.

The dark shape mumbled sadly,

“I am just a shadow, that is all I will ever be.”

A small star in the looked at him confused,

“Surely you have your own beauty! Do not let the moon’s boasting muffle you.”

The shadow looked back at her with eyes of fire,

“You are just as marvelous! We all have a purpose within that desire.”

The star understood how he felt,

For she too was a shadow in an asteroid belt.

Things who are not shadows, thought they brought fright and terror.

But not all strike fear,

But merely shed tears,

Of longing to be set free from their own darkness.

The author's comments:

I have been writing for years, but I have never tried submitting my pieces! This poem is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “Starry Night.” I started writing because of my late Grandfather, who also wrote poetry, painted, and drew with charcoal. My dad has always said I have a gift for writing so I decided to do something with it and submit it!
