Bridges Burned
Yellow and orange consume the rails.
Red. A predator lurching out of the
shadows until the prey is gone, out of sight.
I can’t help
but feel victorious
at seeing the rabid flames spiral.
I’ve finally released
the leash. My beast is let loose.
The curving rails of glitter char and shrivel
in on themselves, the beauty of the past
lost.
As if it were never there at all.
The successes and brightness of
the past days months years: smolder.
Nothing.
Leaving nothing but the ruin of the
present.
I tilt my head, breathing in the
reassurance the flames emanate, awakening
tranquility within me.
With each lick of heat, tendrils of fury
release from my body,
making the walk across the bridge easier.
Each stride carries with it, the flame.
I let the world around me ignite;
only footfalls are left.
