"Writing, I think, is not apart from living. Writing is a kind of double living. The writer experiences everything twice. Once in reality and once in the mirror which waits always before or behind."

You are the crow at sunset

The stars at twilight

The dark silhouette of the weeping willow at sunrise
You are the blood dripping from the wound

The paleness of the cheek

The glossy curl falling from the barber's scissors
You are the creaking of the door
The wounded soldier's cry of pain
The ambulance at midnight on the cracked and un-traveled road
You are the black cat meowing at the barn's window

The sound of smoke
The clock ticking beside the empty bed
But you are not the sun bursting over the horizon

The lilacs lining the lawn
The waves breathing in and out on the crowded beach
You are not the carefree mocking bird singing

The mother humming to the child at bedtime

The laughter that rings true and soulful
You are the suicidal walk after midnight
The white expanse of bare ceiling
The cigarette behind the drugstore, still burning
