Faintly Smiling
A small glimmer
A faint line etched into your face
Like a half-began sketch;
barely there
More of a hope
than a real thing
A flicker of warmth in your eye
Like a dove's pale egg
disappearing from a magician's sly hands:
now you see it
now you don't
Hinting that perhaps we were
once more
than two kids passing
in the halls,
pretending that we don't know
each other's secrets
from long ago
A glance,
like a light touch upon my cheek,
the last evidence that
we were once friends.
