The Dreamer

Can we unfold the mystery
of the human soul?
It is that rare bird that alights upon a branch,
makes you catch your breath
and beam at the surprise,
but with a sudden blink
it disappears.
If not for the image
imprinted on the eye,
was it ever really there?
Was it real?
For as you struggled
to imprison it in your memory
and grasp it in your mind,
it eluded you,
as surely as a ghostly recollection,
a lingering image from a dream without context,
reveling nothing.
For when you asked,
‘Are we the dreamers
or the dreamer’s dream?’
there was only
silence
