Black Squirrels
Why does it seem like I don’t have any time?
When for the first time in my life
This is never going to end and I will never have
To stoop to holding onto strings
Of something I’m better off without
You said you loved me ever since you saw me
Drinking a forty on some idle steps
Of some idle house on an uneventful Saturday night
Let’s be honest, let’s be frank
There’s no one else quite like you or like I
Now you can save me from everything
You: a mosaic of what I remember from last night
And whatever else was forgotten
You are the consequence of my obsessions
Let me drink, let me forget
So where have you been all these long years?
Just waiting to find me dizzy
Already, too early, in some basement party
Where eyes roll like marbles, stomachs drop like elevators
You belong to me, moaning and drunk in your sleep
In your bed you thrill me, this borough will kill me
On mean streets they implore you to set the world on fire
So light up my body, burn me up in this bed
Roll my ashes deep in the pit of your cigarette
Breathe me into your lungs; breathe me into good-night
