Prelude to Rain

Piano-key afternoon

when chords pour and tremble –

wind across a prairie

sweeping clouds by and by –

a melancholy sigh,

at the burdens the heart carries.

The scent of lilies, wind-swept on a plain

and a single tear,

a prelude to rain.

A low rumble in the heavens –

a drum-roll, muffled

by cotton-ball clouds

slowly darkening from white

to grey,

as rolling hills of golden grain

bow low in the wind,

a prelude to rain.
