Tonight we all are gathered here
to mourn the loss of one so dear
a life cut short before its time
a new name in the devils rhyme
tonight we've come to say farewell
when we'll meet next we can't tell
the hymns are sung, the tears are cried,
we'll see you on the other side

an empty place where you once stood
your name carved on a cross of wood
something has been lost tonight
an innocence, a smile, a light
a life now gone, a heartbeat stilled
an emptiness that can't be filled
so raise your glasses high, my friends
we don't know when this story ends

this life it passes by so fast
so short is is, first breath to last
standing here beside your grave
asking God your soul to save
why He took you we don't know
why He chose to lay you low
why out of us all you were lost
and we remain to bear the cost

it is not for us to ask Him why
all here tonight will someday die
from dust we came, to dust return
this life is but a brief sojourn
so say goodbye, then walk away
theres nothing more that we can say
forgive us all for we have sinned
we are but candles in the wind

I purposely didn't add punctuation.

This has to be one of the best poems I have ever read.  The rythem and flow is incredible and your word choice couldn't have been any better.  And I don't just say this about any poem either. Trust me: I don't lie.

:( This is so sad! I'm glad you didn't add punctuation, it adds emotion to it.

It tells such a powerful story, good job. :) The last two stanzas are my favorite, you did an amazing job with them!
