It was gone before I
ever had a chance
to notice its gleaming
torso, like a vial of
mercury reflecting an
afternoon sun:
Emily Dickinson used
a mattress just the same
as anyone else.
This fact somehow surprises
me, as if it is impossible
to imagine the long dead poet
