the girl
Our eyes meet and we smile
Knowing that we hold so much of each other’s past
I look at you and see the little kid you used to be
And the smile that would make my heart lift up
And soar…
We don’t talk anymore
I hear rumors that crush my heart
But then again…I’m sure you have to.
Do you ever want to go back?
To when we used to make shapes out of the clouds
Laugh at the word kiss
Spend recess laughing at boys and drawing on the sidewalk
When the only thing that made us cry were skinned knees
And our biggest fear was growing up
Do you ever wish things would have been different?
If we were still those same little girls,
Would we be at all the same people we are now?
When our eyes meet
I see the sadness even though you smile
And it still makes my heart ache like it did so many years ago
I want to make you laugh and put that spark back in your eyes that I used to love
But I know I can’t
I wish you were still that young girl
My best friend
Who loved the color blue and chewed strawberry bubble gum
The girl who I knew everything about
But now you’re a stranger and I smile
So that I don’t have to accept that
I can’t save you anymore
