the tree
When I close my eyes
I see a massive tree.
Its trunk twisted with old age
bare wood intertwines with rough bark
black sharpie tattoos the tree with initials
of Romeo’s and Juliet’s
and forever friends.
Branches sway up to the clear indigo sky
like gospel singers shouting up to the heavens.
No leaves shade the branches
leaving the twigs bare, with no
curtain to hide behind.
Light splatters on the damp ground
like spotlights on hardwood floor
waiting for a few graceful ballerinas.
I see a massive tree
when I close my eyes.
