And the Ash
Fell like Rain
Fell like Tears
Onto the Earth
It Doused the crowd
With a Scent
A Fragrence so Familiar
A Stench so Unforgettable
It smelled of Mothers
Of Fathers, of Sisters
Of Brothers
It smelled of Neighbors
Of Strangers, of Friends
Of Lovers
It smelled of Teachers
Of Families, Of Towns
Of Cities
It reeked of People
Once Living, Breathing,
Human
People
People with Aspirations,
Jobs, Homes,
Fears, Friends
And Families
Now Descending
Onto the Vegetation
Into the Snow
And into our Hearts, Minds and Tears
