My Heartbeat.
He isn’t like the rest of them.
I can remember memories with him distinctly.
Shivering in the cold, my body trembling with tears,
The start of a snowmobile in the distance,
The sound of it as it flew off down the trail,
The dogs barking at nothing in the background,
I can hear it all still.
But the things I remember the most, is his voice.
Leaning against the car, lost under his Carhartt,
The tears kept on coming.
I remember crying that I want my daddy back.
He pulled me back at arms length,
Wiped away my tears,
And told me it would all be okay, he would always
be there for me.
Hearing that was the thing I missed hearing the most.
My heart skipped a beat,
and I curled back into his embrace.
At that point I was exhausted and we went inside.
I cuddled up to his side and fell asleep next to him,
listening to his heartbeat.
The perfect moment,
The one I remember specifically,
The perfect sound in my ears.
The one thing that kept us going.
I knew he was my heartbeat.
