A Friend?
You didn’t just drift into the mist.
To talk, just drive for a few miles.
Drop us off somewhere
But neither has anything to say.
We’re not clouds
Morosely trudging across the sky.
We were friends.
But I don’t have anything to say.
Things changed.
We changed.
I thought about you.
How you never, ever called
How your house line was out of service.
You never said goodbye.
I cried.
You sat on an airplane moving back east.
You come back.
Come to our play. Come in our room.
Hardened, I want to say.
“You don’t belong here, anymore.”
But I don’t since I’m choking back
three years of emotion.
On opening night
when you
don’t even remember my name.
No, you didn’t drift into the mist
And although I
still miss you
sometimes I wish you had.
