I used to drift throughout life
Emotionless
Immune to all feeling
Invincible to pain
But closed to happiness

One day though
A simple statement
Spoken by a friend
Ran deep
Penetrating my fortress

Stone and brick crumbled
But my guard wasn’t lowered
Once the smoke began to clear
The same statement
Engulfed me

Others would whisk by
Throwing the comment out
Like it was nothing
Like it carried no baggage
Like it was weightless

I tried to ignore it
Unsuccessfully
My calm exterior didn’t falter
Resisted the change
The power of the statement

In the darkness though
My dreams and thoughts
Come to life
Rear up like caged animals
Demons of both good and evil

As I sat pondering
The truthfulness of the statement
I felt my heart beat quicken
And my soul begin to ache
With a longing like never before

Lying in excruciating pain
I fought for sleep
Longed for sleep
Prayed for sleep
To deliver me from this painful world

Finally sleep took my hand
And led me to my pool of dreams
I dove in immersing myself
In my reality of thoughts
Temporarily purging my soul

When I awoke in the morning
One thought lingered
One feeling remained
One dream enveloped me
In longing

The statement was true
Had always been true
But foolish me was too blind
Everyone around me knew
Had always known

Only one ignorant one remains
The most important one
I can only hope
That maybe someone somehow
Will tell you the statement

That maybe I can show you
What the statement is
How my heart melts
In a fire of longing
Like never before

Alone I shiver
With the strength of emotion
I often wonder how
I doubted the statement’s truth
It’s as inevitable as the sunrise

As promised as the sunset
As present as feeling
As endless as time
As sweet as music
As rhythmic as rhyme

One day maybe
I will gain the courage
Or you will gain the knowledge
And somehow, sometime, somewhere
We’ll both know

That I love you
