If my family ever decides to drag me to California,
Well that would not be a good place,
I wouldn’t belong
I’d miss my blue mountains
And the stars that sparkle outside my window,
That are seen most nights when lying awake,
Even if I could see them there
They would be all wrong
But then I’d listen in secrecy to my favorite song
It would light up the dark
And put a smile on my face.

If I am ever asked to speak,
And it’s nobody I know asking
And the room is filled with people who I bet are just dying to laugh
And my legs start to feel weak
I’ll wear a mask
And remember my song,
It’ll take all I have
To make my words come out, strong and loud,
It will feel like shouting
But, with that same smile on my face, I will start to speak

And when it’s time to go up on stage and strike my strings
I feel ready to lose dinner
But I know these chords
And I have figured out the beat
And there are five others in my position
And when I get started it really is wonderful
All the people in their seats
Start to smile
And even if it’s not for me,
There really is no reason to pay attention to my feet.
