The Fight
The bell rings,
announcing Round One.
I enter the ring.
The fight has begun.
I can feel the building tension.
Boy, I’m fighting for your attention.
I put on my boxing gloves.
The grand prize is your love.
I throw some punches.
Hear some bone crunches.
I hear her say I’m too shy
To do all of that.
I’ll never win the guy
And I’ll taste the mat.
But that’s a lie
‘Cause you don’t know what I’m talkin’ about
Unless you’ve known the pain I’ve known
And hey, did I mention?
I’m fighting for your attention.
The bell tolls.
I know the goal.
I’m about to go through
with the painful Round Two.
I can sense the building tension,
‘Cause boy, I’m fighting for your attention.
With every blow to my jaw
I see more and more
of these little flaws
that I never knew were there before.
I begin to doubt my strength and my route
and hopes of happiness fade,
till I’m blinded by
the damage my opponents made.
But hey, did I mention?
I’m fighting for you attention.
The bell rings.
I step into this fateful ring.
Here we are, Round Three.
All I can see
is the blood on my face
and realize that I’m gonna lose
in which case
I will never see you.
I prepare myself for the inevitable KO.
I can feel the building tension,
‘Cause boy I’m fighting for your attention.
I am viciously hit down.
My body pounds against the ground.
I hear the distant countdown
3…2…1… KO!
So I want you to know,
as I taste sweat, blood and the mat,
that you really don’t know what I’m talkin’ about
unless you’ve known the pain I’ve known.
And hey, did I mention?
I’m fighting for a taken boy’s attention.
