Sweet Ambivalence
I understand your pain
He killed your family,
murdered many
He has been America’s focus for a decade
transforming the dimension of the Muslim world into a sole, narrow view of terror
Since the planes crashed, the country has changed
How security is managed,
our safety concerned
How religion is practiced,
where to build a place of worship
And how more lives are lost, as destruction is caused across the sea
I never said let him be
I never said keep him in his cave
But I never said retaliation was key
When I heard the news, heard flags were waved and people cheered
I could not understand
Why do Americans rejoice in killing?
Do not call me a radical extremist
I am only describing the innate surge of sadness, confusion, and desperation that swept through me
when I could not conceive that like-minded others who I thought believed war is not the answer,
let spread like cancer that destruction for destruction is what is called justice
Of course he is a bad man
He is a killer
But doesn’t that make you a killer too, when you perform the action he did
Killing for killing is destruction for destruction, and that is not what justice is
I long for peace
But it is hard to find in times like these
when violence persists and war victories are praised
Why am I the only who feels this way?
That you are celebrating hatred
You killed a destructive mastermind
and you think that now you can have a settled peace?
The whole world is blind
with passionate fire blazing hatred into their eyes
Call me an unpatriotic soul,
a woman with no devotion to her nation
Send me off the planet
to a place where a heavenly peace persists,
where they say violence is never the answer
