I'm sorry we left you in the dust.
I'm sorry we left you all alone.
What were you thinking when we left you on that dirt road?
Did you think we'd put the car in reverse?
Did you think we'd come back?
I watched you chase after the car.
You didn't want us to go.
I observed the pain beaming from your eyes.
I never wanted to say goodbye.
I'm sorry we left you to fend for yourself.
I'm sorry we left you all alone.
I wonder where you are now.
Did you find yourself a home?
If you have, do they treat you with love?
Do they pet you, and sleep with you at night?
I'm sorry I never spent much time with you.
I'm sorry I treated you differently after you grew up.
I sit here and think of you, I am ashamed.
I remember you always moping around.
I remember you always begging for affection.
We never gave it to you.
I remember you always running out the door, every chance you got.
We never took you for walks.
We never gave you freedom.
We kept you cooped up in the house all day, everyday.
Maybe that's why, you always ran off.
But now your free, or maybe your the corpse in a garden.
I observed the pain beaming from your eyes.
You never wanted the open road.
You just wanted to be loved.
I wish I could tell you I love you.
I wish I could say, "Princess it's okay."
I wish I could do all of the things I didn't.
I wish I could play with you.
I wish I could take your for walks.
I wish you could lay with me at night.
I wonder where you are.
If your still walking this earth,
I wonder if you ever think of us.
I wonder if you despise us.
I know I would.
I still find myself wondering what you were thinking that night.
Did you think we didn't want you anymore, that we just threw you away?
I'm sorry we left you in the dust.
I'm sorry we left you all alone.
You didn't want us to go.
I'm sorry for everything.
I hope you found a home.
I hope they treat you the way we should have.
I hope you no longer feel pain.
I'll never let myself live it down.
You could be anywhere by now.
I'm sorry we drove away.
I'm sorry we left you in the dust.
I'm sorry we left you all alone.
I'm sorry we left you,
on that dirt road.

The author's comments:
I couldn't sleep last night, because I was interrupted by the thought of my old dog, Princess. I couldn't help but wonder what happened to her after we left her on that dirt road. I wonder about it all the time. I hope she is at peace. I hope she found a home. It's a long story as to why she was left on the dirt road, so I will leave it at that.

Thank you SO much Loud Dreamer. I really tried to perfect this piece as much as I could. I do feel guilty, every single day. Thank you SO much again, for reading and commenting. I appreciate it so very much. :))

Wow, this is a very moving work, I love it! I think it ran a bit long, but I love how you pulled the reader into what you were feeling as you drove away from your dog. As a dog person myself, it kind of draws me in and makes me share a bit of the guilt that you felt in some of the things I am guily of as well. I love especially how it was descriptive, and the smoothness of it as I read. Great work, sunshine!
