The Doll
The clock’s tick-tocking so sped up,
The only noise it makes is a dull clicking
As hours pass in minutes.
This is the only sound,
And it echoes in the still, dark room.
Here time is endless.
Speeding and dragging,
Yet never moving.
A single candle on a small table flickers and flares,
Casting strange shadows around the room.
The windows behind me are swathed in dark red curtains,
Sealing me inside the lonely room.
A mirror reflects back the room,
And people who aren’t there dance before my eyes.
I am little Alice,
The one with the glass eyes and frilly dress,
Sitting on the cold floor,
Holding the deceptive mirror.
I drop one single red tear
As the candle blows out,
Cloaking the room in darkness
As the cover of the speeding clock cracks.
