Death Like Autumn
The prettiest crime I've ever seen
Is that of autumn's golden gleam
When leaves lose their lush green hue
The death inside is known by few

The color flees the bright red corpse
 A gruesome scene postcards endorse
 Painters' brushes dab the dead
Into their places on trees' heads

I'd rather face the lions den
Than feel the vibrant death within
Each curling leaf to reach the ground
Without a scream, without a sound

Beauty is a mask of pain
And autumn's nothing if not slain
If I could pick a way to go
It would be lovely this I know
